Hi Beth, thanks for joining us today. Talk to us about building your team? What was it like? What were some of the key challenges and what was your process like?
Yes, in preparation to open the first Brain Balance in Maryland my business had employees from day 1! As a career educator and yoga instructor I have always been around a community of learners. For some, learning is challenging and for others they have an insatiable appetite for learning. It has brought me great joy to inspire others to learn. As a member of the yoga community, when word spread about my Brain Balance, other yoga teachers and students were inspired to learn more about what I was building and join me! As a result, Sarah, who is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist and certified Yoga Instructor, showed a desire to join my team and I was thrilled! Her expertise in the field and interest in a holistic approach to brain health made her the perfect choice to become my Program Director. Additionally, my yoga student Phoebe, a Psychology graduate student, expressed interest in joining my team as well and I made her my Assistant Director. Furthermore, a former student and coaching client approached me about working at Brain Balance in an entry position as a Coach. The enthusiasm and energy around amazing people coming to ME about joining my team was humbling and meaningful! As we expand, the interest and flow of folks wanting to be a part of Brain Balance continues!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My passion for supporting neurodiverse individuals and my background in education led me to create Breathe Learn Connect Services, LLC, where I focused on helping differently-abled individuals strengthen their Executive Functioning skills. My holistic approach combined education with yoga, mindfulness, and meditation, offering practical strategies to improve brain function and overall well-being. I realized that as one person I could only serve a limited number of people. In order to scale my reach, my partner Chris and I decided to co-found a Brain Balance center in Maryland in order to combine our expertise in education and business to support individuals facing cognitive challenges. As the owner of a Brain Balance center, I am committed to making a positive impact on children and families in need of support. My goal is to create transformative experiences that promote brain health and wellness and serve as many people as possible and help them unleash their fullest potential.
My Brain Balance of Greater Baltimore offers a non-medical cognitive training program for children & adults to improve focus, stress management, anxiety, comprehension and performance. What sets us apart is that our comprehensive program incorporates learnings from cognitive, behavioral and nutrition fields—an integrated approach that is literally redefining what’s possible. Often, families come to us having tried many, many other related symptom based approaches due to struggling in school and life as as result of neurodiverse conditions, I have personally witnessed the participants enrolled in the Brain Balance program at our center show significant progress in many areas including focus, attention, communication, and social skills in a short amount of time. The exciting results inspire me to share Brain Balance with as many people as possible!
I am most proud of the smiles and happiness that we are producing by allowing individuals to feel accepted and more confident and they build stronger more efficient brains!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As a child, I was described as energetic, wiggly, exuberant, and often not always able to channel what seemed to be an endless well of energy. Despite my fidgeting and impulsivity, I loved school, my peers, and most of all my teachers. I was always trying to connect with my teachers and was often labeled a “teacher’s pet”. My keen desire to be with the teachers gave me the opportunity to shine because school was hard. My attention was flitting and often I was spinning wheels. If I could spend time with my teachers they would see that my intentions were pure and that I was smart despite my lackluster grades and weak standardized test scores. Always a connector and people person, my desire to reach people and impact their lives started early as well as my resilience. My experience with supportive teachers as a somewhat quirky but driven young person, I was definitely what is now considered neurodiverse, led me to pursue a career in education at a very early age. I wanted to help others develop resiliency. Starting as a camp counselor, swimming lesson teacher in high school led to an early childhood education university student, and ultimately a classroom teacher at 21 who completed a Masters in Education from Johns Hopkins at night while teaching full time. I found myself working with kids of all ages and a real natural. Soon, I realized that the most challenging or quirky kids always found their way to me. I understood their q uirks and intelligence despite being told to sit down and be quiet or conform and fit into a box where they didn’t quite fit. I could see them and their potential and I made it my mission to believe in them and help them reach their goals and not just survive but thrive.
Part of our marketing strategy right from the start of opening our business included establishing a relatable social media presence with organic posts that featured our team. On socials, the audience wants to see people! Not just graphics, logos, and text. We also started a feature called “Tiny Mic Tuesday” that featured a teeny tiny microphone with a trending or timely prompt that each team member responds to. The audience loves this feature and people began asking for this feature each week! It was a great way to have fun, show team members’ personalities and attract likes and follows. The added bonus is the morale boosting and ownership the team members felt.
